SBK is a laser vision correction (LVC) procedure that can treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. When performing Intralase SBK procedures, we use what is called a Femtosecond laser. This cool-beam laser allows us to remove a very thin layer of the cornea, which makes it safer and leads to quicker recovery times compared to LASIK. Additionally, patients who undergo SBK have fewer instances of dry eye compared to LASIK, experience less light sensitivity, and deal with fewer complications. 

PRK is a bit different from SBK, instead of creating a flap in the cornea, the surgeon completely removes a portion of the outer portion of the cornea, called the epithelial layer, which then grows back over a few days. PRK is considered the safest laser procedure in the short-term and is actually the original laser vision corrective method, predating LASIK and Intralase SBK. PRK is a great option for those with thin corneas or those who participate in high contact sports such as MMA.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. It involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The type of IOL used can be tailored to the patient’s specific vision needs, potentially correcting multiple refractive errors simultaneously. This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals over 40 who are experiencing age-related vision changes and are seeking an alternative to glasses or contact lenses. Since the natural lens is replaced, the risk of developing cataracts in the future is eliminated.
